Magic Moments

So last night I did a horrible thing... I went to a talent show. (It was Disney themed and it was recommended to my by a fellow Disney College Program Alumni... later did I find out is because they were desperate to sell tickets)

Let me explain, me going to a talent show is a really bad thing. It's not because I think I have talent and I critique people... kind of. It's just that I go to these talent shows and I watch people who think they're good and they have this almost cocky air to them and they turn out horrible! Or they choose the wrong material and the end up making a fool out of themselves. Ok, I'm sounding like a jerk. So let me give examples of the evening and explain.

There were these three girls, and they were singing the song by the 3 muses "Zero to Hero". At first you were hopeful because the first girl sounded great, but then the other two bombed it completely. And another thing, the other two girls were already in another act! Do you really have to show off that much?!

Then there was this one girl. She sang the Little Mermaid's "Part of Your World". She wouldn't have been half bad, had she stopped trying to pretend that her jeaned legs were fins and trying to "swim" around all seductively.

Then there was another girl, this is what I mean by choosing the wrong material. She sang the song "Almost There" from the Princess and the Frog. Only the character and the actress who plays her are black and therefore have the suitable jazzy voice that's appropriate for that mood and song. But this girl was white and obviously from Utah. And the way she articulated in most of the song was totally contradictory to the original song! Please! Respect the original composer and sing it like it was created to be sung!

But my favorite by far was a young man who played the saxsaphone to Mulan's "Reflections". I actually ended up voting for him because, well you just had to. He had soul. Haha. But the best thing about it was the fact that he was up there in the middle of the stage with fog surrounding him and neon colored lights shinning from behind him. Not to meantion the slicked-back hair, open-buttoned shirt, closed eyes and wiggling eyebrows. He was hard-core. I had to take a picture.

But don't get me wrong, there were some really awesome ones. Like the two guys on the steel guitars who sang "Why Should I Worry" or the jazz group who did an upbeat version of "When You Wish Upon a Star", a girl who did an awesome version of "Kiss the Girl" which included some cool guy with one of those box drums that you sit on. It was sweet. But the last one was funny. It was an a'cappela group who did a medely of different disney songs with a beat boxer that was nuts. It was hilarious.

Good night. But it's still decided that I shouldn't be allowed to go to talent shows. I'm far too irreverent.

Jazz man: taken on my iPhone so the quality's not the best
