Meet the Roommates

So I'm still trying to get used to things. I've got this crazy schedule going on and I'm in the process of training and honestly, I'm so exhausted that I can't even comprehend all of the things I've learned today, let alone write them out on this blog. So I thought I'd take time out to introduce my roommates.

Trysten- my room-roommate who's from all over the world because her dad is a diplomat and currently living in Columbia. She's tiny and cute and looks JUST like Ariel. Her job is being a character, "Winnie the Pooh Class" which means she's different characters that are the same size or popularity level.

Katie- is from Arizona and a BYU-Provo kid. She's totally animated and pretty much laughs at any little thing I say. She's working in Hollywood studios food services. She's most excited about her crazy "Newsies" hat for her costume.

Alyssa- is from Utah and going to school in Rexburg. It's funny because we are mutually friends. My roommate Karen worked early morning janitorial with her and I told Karen to get her name for me but she never did. Then when we met and I told her my name, she asked me if I knew Karen. We both said, "You're the ONE!" Hahaha, it was funny. But she's great, and our clothes have a tendancy to match. She works on Soarin' in Hollywood Studios.

Kristy- is from Michigan and going to school in Provo. Her job is merchandise in Downtown Disney. She hasn't started working or training yet but she's excited. She's really sweet and gentle but a crack up when she's tired!

Kendall- is awesome. She's from Provo and goes to school in Provo. She has gorgeous long brown hair and is just stunning. And she's not affraid to put boys in their place when they ask her to go party. Haha. She's working in Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom and she's the only one who could possibly look gorgeous in a Disney costume.

I HAVE to go to bed now. I'm starting to spell wrong and my words are mixing together. I'm also getting sick with the on-set of a scratchy throat and rumbly stomach so pray that I get better soon!

"Please keep your hands, arms, and legs inside the tram at all times..."

Today was exhausting! My roommate Kendall and I woke up early for Orientation for the Magic Kingdom. We had to be there at 715 so in order to catch the right bus at the right time, we had to get up and dressed in our Business Attire at 545. When we got to the park we were taken on another tour that taught us all about the history of the Magic Kingdom and even some trade secrets which I am LEGALLY BOUND not to reveal in any way... besides, you don't want to know, you want to believe in the magic. But it was SO cool. We got to go into the park before the guests were allowed in and we went through each of the lands learning a different story. I am going to write the gists of them below.

Adventure Land- was built so you could never see it all at one time. There are turns and corners so that something new is discovered at every turn.

Frontier Land- There is SO much detail in it that no one would notice unless they were looking or history teachers, like the brick path down the red cement represents the paths they had in colonial times because people would dump their chamber pots on the street, or the tilted shutters on the windows because they used to use leather to hold them up and the sun would stretch them, therefore tilting the windows.

Fantasy Land- is supposed to be the carnival behind Cinderella's castle, so if you look behind the exterior of the attractions in that land, you'll see and brick wall that looks like the castle to signify that you're in Cinderella's kingdom.

Tomorrow Land- is always being updated. Because tomorrow is always after today, they can't keep the same thing for too long. Where the Buzz Lightyear ride used to be was an attraction called "If We Had Wings" which was about air planes... well we already do have air planes so that needed to be updated.

After our main tour of the park; and getting to ride Haunted Mansion and Buzz Lightyear (without having to wait in line), we split up into our individual jobs and met with our leaders to see where we would work and give us our costumes! My guy's name was Allan, and he was in his mid 70's. But he still loved walking around the park and taking pictures for people who needed him. He talked r e a l l y s l o w but he was still interesting when he wasn't repeating himself 5x's or forgetting stuff in different buildings! I was really tired and I'd already been up for 6 hours and one of the old guys I'm training with thinks he's the next Chubby Checker. I wanted to smack him so bad! but anyways, I learned I am NOT working in the park :( In fact, I'm not even in eyesight of it! I work in the parking lot. My job is going to be driving and commentating the parking lot tram. I was completely bummed at first. I'm going to be in the sun all day long and wearing a color that tends to attract bees with a waist line that's closer to my armpit than my actual waist. But I'm going to make the best of it! I'm going to be there for people to be excited before they get to the park, and I will get to be on an actual ride pretty much all day long. It'll just take me some time to get used to it and I'm sure I'll love it!

I've got work tomorrow early again and I am pooped! So I just wanted to post a couple of really nasty looking pictures of me (because I am so tired and sweaty from an immensely long day, I'm sure I'll start looking like myself again in a couple weeks or so) in my new costume. Be sure and notice my favorite part... the return of the Skorts! *I also have a plastic rain suit that's not pictured because I need a different size, but it's overalls and a huge coat worthy of defeating Monstro in, let alone a Florida hurricane!)

Like the Orthopedic shoes?

BREAKING NEWS!!!

So it's official! I am now working at...... (Drum roll)

Disney World's
MAGIC KINGDOM!!!

Tomorrow is when I get to take my Traditions class, where we get to learn all about the history of Disney and how to point appropriately without offending any Foreign visitors. But it will be so exciting. We also get to take tours of the famous underground city called the Utilidoors. So I'll be sure to fill you in with what that actually means when I find out myself... The only downside to this is that I will have to get up by 530 to get there for the 700 class. Woo hoo...

But I'm having such a great time already! I've just been hanging out with my roommates, soaking in as much knowledge as I can. I have that major new-kid-on-campus feeling and I HATE it. So I can't wait to actually get used to it and stop feeling like everyones looking at me like a "nube" (aka: new-bee). But after classes and going to the extremely long and freezing housing meeting (I had to sit in the front row with the air conditioning blowing on my short-wearing leg. The only way to escape the cold was to lift my feet high off the ground so I'm sure I looked like a fool sticking my legs up in the front row.) and then almost missing the bus because I couldn't find my security ID (I would have had to walk home a mile away or pay $50 for a new ID card). But I made it home and together my roommates and I walked the block to Wendy's for lunch and Walgreen's for forgotten supplies.

We just got back from spending a couple hours at the pool. Which was totally relaxing and toasty. Some of my roommates already have a tan line! It'll take me a while to get there with my thick English/Native American skin. But now we're all going to take a much deserved nap.

Woo for Magic Kingdom!!

Disney World Adventures: Day ONE

DAY ONE

After waking up from a night spent in TERROR from the War-of-the-Worlds lightning storm going on during the night. But the hotel that I staid in was MAGNIFICENT! There was a king-sized bed with ten feather pillows allllllll to myself and glorious room service! But anyways, I grabbed a cab to Vista Way Apartments, which is where all the Disney Interns stay. My cab driver was a cute little old asian man who told me all about the complex and the places I can go to around it. He was very helpful.

I got to the complex soon after. The sun was out and the breeze was blowing so it was actually really nice. I met some really energetic people and I could totally feel the Disney Juices running through my veins. I was able to get most of my paper work finished and a really cheezy looking security ID card. I hefted my body bags to building 3 and walked the flight of stairs to room 306. Four of my roommates were already there. Katie (BYU, Quick Food Service), Alyssa (BYU-I, Attractions), Tristan (BYU, Character... and my roommate), Kristy (BYU, Merchandise), and later Kendall (BYU, Attractions) showed up. We got to know each other and spent most of the time unpacking our stuff. I found out that my roommate Alyssa worked with my friend Karen at BYU-Idaho so we already had a connection. At 1:30, Kristy and Kendall and I went to get on a bus to go get our finger prints done for a background check. Not as interesting but it was cool to see a behind-the-scenes Disney building, which has as much Disney Decor as anything you would see in the park so it TOTALLY brought more excitement with it.

After we got back to the complex, Alyssa, Tristan, and Katie had hitched a ride with a male to go eat and go to Walmart. So Katie, Kendall, and I were left to figure out the Cast Member bus system. We headed to Walmart half starved and running purely on Disney Magic. We filled our carts to the brim (mainly with food since it's the only thing we had on our mind) and spent WAY too much. Returning home we ate our much needed meal and chatted about our different fun disney memories and our excitements for our job. We were all hot a sweaty so we decided to go check out the pools here. We swam and swam and met tons of new people. There isn't a lot of new people here because only the BYU programs are starting and the normal ones will be arriving in May. But we relaxed and soaked.

Now I'm sitting on the floor of my new (HUGE) apartment because I have to be close to the ether-net plug in order to use the internet. But I'm tired and extremely sore, plus I have to get up early tomorrow for a housing meeting and then I get to find out where I'm going to be working. I'm sorry for the quick post but I HAD to post something tonight or it would never happen. now i'm of to have Disney Dreams... wow, that was too corny.

Ok, I Caved...

So this past week I made the most amazing discovery... LPs or records. They are my new weak spot. I was at Half Price Books with my mother when I saw the records they had, I went through tons of Barbara Streisand and Linda Rondstat and found the golden ticket!! I found an original Beatles' Let It Be and Introducing the Beatles albums. I was SO excited that I HAD to get them! i figured they were a worthy investment although my mother told me that I now qualify for the title of "Getting on the Beatle Bus". After that I went to the DI (Deseret Industries) and found three old Disney LPs as well; Aristocats, Mary Poppins, and Bambi. I was on a roll. My friend Steven told me about this magical new place called Easy Street Records. We went into Seattle where I caved in again and bought Beatles' Help!. Now I just need to invest in a turntable, only I'd have to sell my soul or first-born child before I could afford it...

On the Road Again

So I'm home in Washington for the time being. School ended and I packed all my stuff up and headed out. It was sad to leave my roommates. I had a lot of fun with Karen and Breanne and it was sad to say goodbye to Jody who's now a college graduate so we won't have the chance to live together again. But it's nice to be back in Washington. After the tree shock wore off and I was able to breathe without feeling like I'm drowning, I remembered why I love it here. But unfortunately, I'll only be here for a while before I head down to Florida to go work at DISNEY WOLRD!!

Anyways, I'm sorry this is kind of condensed, but my mother doesn't have the internet in her little house so I had to come to the library to use theirs and now my battery's dying. But I hope to get another post in soon before I get busy in DW. Wish me luck!

First Wives Club

This has been one of my all-time favorite movies since forever. When I was little I used to watch it all the time because I thought the part on the Painter's Ladder was hilarious! Cracked me up every time! I was watching it today with my mother and it just reaffirmed my love for it! It really is such a woman-empowering film that never gets old. Bette Midler is my favorite. She always reminds me of my mother and I LOVE that white two piece dress suit she wears in the end. Go watch it! You'll love it!

Ukulele Songs

So I've been practicing my ukulele when I can. It was a surprise gift I got from my sister and her two cute kids, and I absolutely LOVE it! So here's the first two songs I've learned to play. Bear with me, they're still kind of bad, but I'm still practicing and I wanted to show my family...

Please excuse the singing, it wouldn't have made sense without it...

Oh Dear... I Need!

I have a problem. I think I covet too much. But I'm going to stop doing these "need" purchases. I've already bought three Beatles' movies this semester and I've had to replace my Polaroid camera and a library book that was stolen, so I can't do anymore fun purchases. But this is something that I want SO BAD! It's an LP of one of the greatest albums ever made. You can get it at Urban Outfitters and it's pretty cheap; only $18, but I'm going to resist!... At least for a while...

Holi Krishna- Festival of Colors

So this past weekend, my roommate Karen and I drove down to Provo for the Festival of Colors. It's a holiday celebrated in the indian culture called Holi Krishna. I went down and stayed with my best friend from home Tabitha. On saturday morning, we got up and drove down to Spanish Fork. We wanted to go early so we could get a better parking spot than last year (i.e. having to walk a mile through a cow pasture and falling into a giant manure/mud pond) and we wanted to go to a little diner and get breakfast. BRILLIANT IDEA! There was no traffic and we actually got a spot IN the parking lot where the Hindu Temple was.

But basically, the festival was AWESOME! There was SO many people that you were basically chest to chest with EVERYONE! We got there and hour early, only to find that the colors weren't going to be thrown until 1:00 when we thought it was 12:00. People were getting restless so some people started early. TJ opened a corner of his chalk and had fun secretly sprinkling it on peoples hair until he full out EXPLODED it into my left eye! Ouch... But more people kept coming and we were getting restless, so TJ and Devon just started counting down randomly until the crowd around us joined in. Then it all BLEW UP! People threw their paint in the air and there was a giant cloud of colored chalk! It was SO thick in the air that you couldn't see a foot away from you. And no matter what you did, you inhaled it and it got into your eyes. You had to cough and spit to get it out and you didn't even care if you spit on someone because that stuff tasted NASTY.

The dust settled after ten minutes and when you looked around, every one looked like a psychedelic rendition of themselves. But mainly you were just straight orange or brown because the colors mixed together. And everyone's nose and mouth was straight black from trying to breathe and spit. And don't try to smile for the camera because your teeth will look worse.

It was SO much much, but totally exhausting. When we got back to Tab's we took turns showering. The paint isn't actually paint. It's a colored chalk that gets in EVERYTHING. Now be warned as you look at the pictures below. My hair was down and my hair is a very dark brown if not black. When I showered, I had to wash my hair THREE times and each time it came out straight black! But overall an amazing weekend, even if I may or may not have developed "the Purple Lung"!

P.S. I took my Polaroid camera instead of my Nikon. I didn't want to risk getting it chalky!
